Rwanda: RPF Investigators Preserved Evidence of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi

The report says RPF investigators, its military wing and local organizations collected survivor and witness accounts, case files and material records, while working with international bodies and the USC Shoah Foundation, a nonprofit known for preserving audiovisual Holocaust testimonies.

According to the New Times account, the documentation included operational papers, local meeting records and correspondence that helped establish how the killings were planned and carried out. The article says this body of evidence supported international inquiries, assisted courts including the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and contributed to the establishment of memorial sites such as Nyamata and Nyarubuye.

The report also cites wider international responses in 1994, including African foreign ministers’ concern ahead of an Organization of African Unity summit in Tunis and a Tunis Declaration condemning massacres and genocide in Rwanda. It says the declaration called for an inquiry to identify perpetrators for prosecution under international law.
