What the report says

Rwanda has secured new climate adaptation funding aimed at helping farmers in drought-prone parts of the country respond to erratic rainfall and longer dry spells, according to The New Times, via AllAfrica. The approval is part of a broader nearly $35 million package from the Adaptation Fund Board covering Rwanda and a regional project in the Horn of Africa.

For Rwanda, $4.97 million has been allocated to support smallholder farmers in Kayonza, Gatsibo and Nyagatare in Eastern Province. The project will be carried out by the UN Development Programme with Rwanda’s Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources, and is intended to improve access to local weather information, promote climate-smart farming methods and strengthen advisory services. Officials said the effort is meant to help farmers make better planting and crop-management decisions and reduce losses linked to unstable weather.

The project is expected to reach at least 10,000 farmers. The article says the three districts were chosen because they have faced repeated climate disruptions over the past five years, including drought and delayed rains that have affected planting and harvests. It also notes that Kayonza experienced major food assistance needs in 2025 after prolonged dry spells.

More broadly, the funding reflects growing concern over climate impacts on agriculture in Rwanda and neighboring countries. In the same package, $30 million will support pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities in Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia. The regional effort will focus on early warning systems, climate risk management and resilient livelihoods.
