Russian strikes killed three people, including a child, in the Kyiv region on Saturday, according to Ukrainian officials cited by Al Jazeera and Reuters. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the regional administration, said the attacks hit three locations in the Boryspil district just outside the capital and left three other people injured.

The reported strikes also triggered fires in two districts of Kyiv after an air raid alert sounded early in the morning. Residents in central parts of the city described strong explosions, while the article said Russian ballistic missiles and Ukraine’s limited air defences have made such attacks difficult to stop. Al Jazeera reported that Patriot systems supplied by the United States remain the only weapons in Ukraine’s arsenal that can reliably intercept those missiles, but that Kyiv says it does not have enough interceptors or batteries.

The attacks came amid intensified cross-border strikes between Russia and Ukraine. Al Jazeera also noted that Ukraine recently hit targets inside Russia, including oil refineries and a warehouse in Ekaterinburg, and that a Ukrainian drone strike in Russian-occupied Crimea killed two people, according to local authorities.

Separately, the US Senate passed an 86-11 sanctions bill targeting Russian energy exports, including proposed tariffs on countries still buying Russian oil and gas. The measure still needs approval from the House and President Donald Trump to become law. Kyiv welcomed the vote, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said it would help reduce Russia’s ability to continue the war.
