Russian Hackers Tried to Steal US and NATO Nuclear Fusion Research - UNITED24 Media

What the report says

United24 Media reported that Russian state-linked hackers conducted a yearlong cyber-espionage campaign against US nuclear researchers, defense contractors, government officials and organizations in NATO countries. The outlet cited a joint cybersecurity advisory from US authorities and more than a dozen allied governments, as well as reporting by CNN and analysis from cybersecurity firm Proofpoint. The reported targets included institutions connected to nuclear science, defense industries and government work.

According to the report, investigators believe the operation sought sensitive intelligence on advanced nuclear research, defense technologies and information that could aid Russia’s war effort against Ukraine. United24 Media said the attackers used an uncommon flaw in email software that could compromise an account when a target opened a malicious message, without requiring a link click or attachment download. Once inside, the hackers could reportedly review as much as three months of emails and obtain a full contact directory.

The joint advisory attributed the activity to a Russian cyber-espionage group previously linked to attempts against Western government and defense institutions. United24 Media also cited British Security Minister Dan Jarvis as saying Russia often tests cyber methods against Ukraine before using them against NATO allies.

The report said Western law enforcement has already acted against the group, including the arrest in Thailand of a suspected member who was later extradited to the United States for trial in Boston. The case matters because it points to continued Russian interest in scientific, military and government intelligence across NATO, following other reported Russian cyber operations against infrastructure connected to military support for Ukraine.
