Russia says seven killed and 40 injured by Ukrainian drone hitting busy beach

Russia’s regional authorities said a Ukrainian drone struck a crowded beach near the village of Arkhipo-Osipovka on the Black Sea coast in southern Russia, killing seven people, including three children, and injuring 40. The BBC reported that 17 of the wounded were taken to hospital. The incident happened at a popular holiday area in the Krasnodar region, a destination that is especially busy for Russian tourists during the summer.

According to the BBC, verified social media footage showed the drone descending toward the shoreline before exploding on impact. Governor Veniamin Kondratyev accused Ukraine of a deliberate attack on civilians, while Ukraine had not commented. The report said it was not clear what the drone had been targeting. Some Ukrainian Telegram channels suggested electronic warfare may have disrupted the drone’s signal, while Russian eyewitness accounts quoted by local media described gunfire before the blast, raising the possibility that air defences tried to intercept it.

The BBC placed the strike in the wider context of an intensifying exchange of long-range attacks between Russia and Ukraine. It noted that Ukraine has increasingly used drones to hit targets deep inside Russia, while Russia continues to carry out missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian cities and residential areas.
