Romania extends pre-trial detention of far-right politician Calin Georgescu

What the report says
A Bucharest court has extended the pre-trial detention of Romanian far-right politician Calin Georgescu by 30 days, according to Al Jazeera, in connection with an investigation into an alleged 1.1 million euro fraud scheme. The decision, issued by the Bucharest Court of Appeal on Oct. 28, 2026, overturned an earlier ruling from Oct. 13 that would have moved Georgescu from police custody to house arrest pending the probe.
Prosecutors say Georgescu and two other suspects convinced a Romanian businessman to hand over the money by claiming they could help him obtain a credit line from a foreign financial institution. Georgescu has denied wrongdoing and said the case is politically motivated. The article also says the detention extension keeps him in police custody until Nov. 27.
Georgescu, a former presidential candidate, became a major figure in Romania’s political turmoil after winning the first round of the cancelled 2024 presidential election. That vote was later annulled over allegations of Russian interference, which Moscow denied. He was then barred from running again, and pro-European centrist Nicusor Dan won the repeat election in May 2025. Al Jazeera also reported that Georgescu faces a separate case involving allegations of inciting violence, spreading false information, threatening national security and promoting fascist leaders.
