What the report says

Eurogamer reports that Rockstar has updated its support information for Grand Theft Auto 6 retail pre-order download codes, clarifying which versions will have regional redemption limits. The issue concerns “code-in-the-box” retail copies, where buyers receive a download code rather than a physical disc, and follows earlier confusion from retailers about where those codes would work.

According to Eurogamer, the restrictions apply to PlayStation 5 retail codes because of PlayStation Network account-region rules. Rockstar’s guidance is that buyers should purchase a copy in the same country or region as their platform account; for example, a U.S. retail code should not be bought for use with a non-U.S. account. Eurogamer says Xbox codes are not region-locked and can be redeemed worldwide regardless of account region.

Rockstar’s listed PS5 redemption regions include Brazil; a LATAM group covering countries such as Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru; North America for Canada and the United States; South Korea; Japan; the United Kingdom; Saudi Arabia and the UAE; a “Rest of Asia” group including Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand; and a broader “Rest of EMEA and Asia” group that includes much of Europe as well as Australia, India, Israel, New Zealand, South Africa, Turkey and Ukraine. Eurogamer also notes that Japanese retail codes expire 170 days after printing under local regulations, meaning a code printed on the stated 19 November launch date would be redeemable until 8 May 2027.

The clarification matters for buyers considering imported or discounted retail copies, since a mismatched PS5 code could fail to redeem. Eurogamer adds that GTA 6 has also been performing strongly in digital pre-order charts, while debate continues over Rockstar’s decision not to include discs in retail copies.
