Regional outage on Amazon Web Services disrupts dozens of popular websites, online services - New York Post

What the report says

The New York Post reported that a regional Amazon Web Services outage on Friday morning interfered with access to numerous widely used websites and online services. User reports began at about 6:40 a.m. ET, according to Downdetector data cited by the Post, with disruptions affecting services such as Apple Pay, DoorDash, Reddit and Hulu.

AWS attributed the incident to connectivity issues involving multiple services in its US-West-2 region, which is based in Oregon, the Post reported. The company’s list of affected services grew to include AWS Direct Connect, Global Accelerator, Internet Connectivity, IoT Core, Amazon API Gateway, Elastic Compute Cloud and Elastic Container Service. AWS categorized the event as “impacted,” meaning customers were experiencing service problems, and said the connectivity issue was resolved shortly after 9 a.m. ET.

The outage highlighted how a problem in one cloud region can affect many unrelated apps, websites and customer-facing platforms that depend on Amazon’s infrastructure. The Post said some companies using AWS apologized to customers on social media, while users complained about apps and sites becoming unavailable; PlayStation users were also among those reporting difficulties.

According to the Post, there was no indication that customer data was lost or that AWS’s broader global network had failed. More broadly, AWS is one of the largest cloud providers, so even regional disruptions can have visible effects across consumer services, payment tools, streaming platforms and online businesses.
