Qatar says US-Iran mediation efforts continuing but no direct talks planned

What the report says
Qatar says mediation efforts involving Qatar, Pakistan and Oman are continuing to reduce tensions between the United States and Iran, but that direct talks between Washington and Tehran are not currently planned. The remarks came amid mixed public signals from both sides about whether negotiations are actually under way.
BBC World News reports that Qatari foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said the immediate aim is to secure a short-term step that could help restart diplomacy and prevent further escalation. He said the mediators are exchanging ideas and drafts with both sides, while also making clear that there is nothing scheduled for direct US-Iran talks. A senior Pakistani security official also said discussions were happening in the background.
Iran has denied President Donald Trump’s claim that talks with the US are in progress. Instead, Iranian officials said their discussions are with Oman over a possible arrangement for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway that handles a large share of global oil and gas trade. US officials, meanwhile, have suggested progress is being made, though no final deal has been announced.
The situation is unfolding alongside maritime tensions in the Gulf, including an overnight report that a cargo vessel was struck by an unknown projectile. The broader context is an effort to reopen diplomatic channels and reduce the risk of further conflict around the strait and the wider regional dispute.
