PRO Industries refuses talks over Shs2.5bn maize payment dispute

What the report says
Mediation over a maize payment dispute between PRO Industries and a group of traders ended without a settlement after the company declined to negotiate, saying related court cases made talks inappropriate. The meeting was convened by Luweero Deputy Resident District Commissioner Abel Bakunda after more than 70 traders protested at the company’s facility in Ndibuluungi, Butuntumula Sub-county.
According to the report by Nile Post, the traders from Luweero, Gulu, Masindi and other areas say PRO Industries owes them more than Shs2.5 billion for maize supplied to the factory. Company representatives attended the meeting with lawyers but maintained that the matter should be handled through the courts. The company has reportedly filed cases against some suppliers, including claims linked to defamation, nuisance, breach of contract and trespass.
Bakunda said his office wanted the sides to establish what amount the company accepts as due, while avoiding interference in the court process. He said the company had not brought documents explaining its position. Isma Mubiru of Limwell, one of the suppliers, said the company acknowledges about Shs1.7 billion, leaving a gap of roughly Shs900 million.
The traders are asking for a breakdown of the lower figure and have rejected allegations that some suppliers colluded with weighbridge operators to alter records. They are also urging senior government leaders, including President Yoweri Museveni, to intervene. The dispute remains unresolved, with traders pressing for payment and the company insisting the issue is tied to ongoing litigation.
