President Museveni Urges Church To Champion Wealth-Creation at 141st Bishop Hannington Commemoration

What the report says
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni used the 141st commemoration of Bishop James Hannington to urge the Church of Uganda and other faith-based institutions to take a more active role in socio-economic transformation, moral guidance and household wealth creation. The message was delivered by Minister for the Presidency and Budiope West MP Babirye Milly Babalanda at Kyando Village in Mayuge District, where Christians gathered to honour the Anglican missionary remembered for his faith and sacrifice.
According to Watchdog Uganda, Museveni said Bishop Hannington’s life and death should remain a source of lessons about courage, service and devotion. He linked the memorial to broader Christian remembrance in Uganda, including Uganda Martyrs Day, and encouraged believers to shape younger generations through disciplined and exemplary conduct. The president also noted the historical contribution of Christian missionaries and churches to education, health services and community development in Uganda.
Museveni said national development depends on cooperation among government, religious leaders, cultural institutions, the private sector and civil society. He asked churches to support government efforts by mobilising communities around programmes such as Operation Wealth Creation, Emyooga and the Parish Development Model, which are intended to improve incomes and living standards. The report says he also thanked organisers and contributed Shs 30 million to the church’s work. Babalanda, in turn, praised religious leaders for promoting morals and urged them to pair preaching with practical messages on hard work and wealth creation.
