What the report says

President Yoweri Museveni used a message delivered at the 141st commemoration of Bishop James Hannington in Mayuge District to call on Christians to live exemplary lives, strengthen their faith and guide young people. The remarks were delivered on his behalf by Minister in Charge of the Presidency Milly Babalanda at Kyando Village on Thursday, according to Nile Post.

Museveni linked the appeal to the legacy of Uganda’s martyrs and other believers who died for their faith, saying their sacrifice should serve as a model of commitment and service to humanity. He also pointed to Uganda’s annual Martyrs Day observance on June 3 as a time to reflect on that history and draw lessons from it.

The President highlighted the role of churches and other religious organizations in national life, especially in education, healthcare and moral formation. He said such institutions continue to be important in communities, including rural areas where public services can be limited. He added that national development depends on the involvement of many stakeholders, while government provides security, infrastructure, education, healthcare and conditions for economic growth.

The commemoration marked 141 years since Hannington, an Anglican missionary and the first Anglican bishop of Eastern Equatorial Africa, was killed in 1885 in present-day Mayuge District. His death remains a significant event in Uganda’s Christian history, and the ceremony was held to honor that legacy.
