President Museveni, Somali counterpart Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Reaffirm Commitment to Peace and Regional Stability

Watchdog Uganda reported that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held bilateral talks at State House, Entebbe, where they reaffirmed cooperation on peace, security and governance. The report said the meeting addressed regional security concerns, Somalia’s state-building agenda, governance reforms and the wider relationship between Kampala and Mogadishu.

According to the publisher, Mohamud thanked Uganda for its role in supporting Somalia’s stability, including the deployment of Uganda People’s Defence Forces personnel through regional peace-support arrangements. He said Somalia’s security situation had improved compared with earlier years, while noting that difficulties persist. He also briefed Museveni on political reforms intended to restore direct voting after a long period without universal suffrage.

Museveni, the report said, welcomed Somalia’s progress and restated Uganda’s willingness to keep working with Somalia toward peace, unity and development. He pointed to the importance of strong national institutions, national cohesion and inclusive governance, and referred to Uganda’s own experience of building stability through institutions and unity rather than sectarian divisions. He also said Uganda had stood with Somalia for 19 years because it viewed the cause as just and aimed at protecting civilians.

The meeting matters because Uganda remains an important regional security partner for Somalia and has contributed troops to efforts aimed at countering instability in the Horn of Africa. Watchdog Uganda reported that both leaders called for sustained African cooperation to address security threats and support sustainable development across the region.
