Yahoo Finance, republishing Bloomberg, reported that successive U.S. heat waves are putting heavy pressure on regional power grids as air-conditioning demand rises alongside rapid growth in electricity use from data centers, factories and artificial intelligence facilities. The report said grid operators serving more than 150 million Americans are facing shrinking reserves and stress on older transmission systems as temperatures in some areas exceed 100F.

The article highlighted emergency alerts across systems including the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, the Southwest Power Pool and PJM Interconnection, which serves 67 million people from the Chicago area to Washington, D.C. PJM’s territory includes Northern Virginia’s major data center hub. According to the report, PJM demand reached a record 168 gigawatts on July 2 during a heat wave, surpassing a peak that had stood for about 20 years. PJM also issued emergency alerts and sought federal permission for data centers to use backup generators.

Other grid operators described different conditions. The Southwest Power Pool secured federal approval to maximize generation after high-level alerts in several western and central states, while Texas’ main grid, ERCOT, has set demand records but has not declared an energy emergency in nearly two years, according to a spokeswoman cited in the story. MISO said it is adding generation and remains focused on reliability for its 45 million customers.

The report frames the issue as a longer-term reliability challenge: hotter, more humid weather can extend electricity demand into evening hours, while new generation and transmission projects can take years and major investment.
