PLU Women Leader Backs NUP Supporters in Mubende LC1 Election Dispute

Nile Post reports that a Patriotic League of Uganda women’s leader in Greater Mubende, Joan Komugisha, has sided with National Unity Platform supporters contesting suspended LC1 elections in Katabalanga and Kibaati villages in Mubende Municipality. The supporters reportedly gathered at Electoral Commission offices on Wednesday, demanding that candidates they say won the village chairperson races be declared winners.

According to the report, Komugisha was joined by Mubende Municipality MP Sumayah Nabawanuka and said the group would stay at the commission offices until the disputed results are announced. Komugisha framed her position as a defence of fair and transparent elections, rejecting suggestions that backing NUP supporters conflicted with PLU’s stance. She also appealed to President Yoweri Museveni, who chairs the NRM nationally, to intervene so the matter is resolved.

The Nile Post article names John Massajjage as a claimant to victory in Katabalanga and Jude Baleke Kezaala as a claimant to victory in Kibaati. Both argued that voters had chosen them and urged the Electoral Commission to respect the outcome. Protesters warned of more demonstrations if results are not declared.

Mubende NRM spokesperson Twaha Mukomazi dismissed the complaints and defended the process, urging calm while the Electoral Commission completes its work under the law. Nile Post said it could not obtain comment from Mubende Electoral Commission officials. The outlet also cited commission figures showing voting took place in 15 villages, with NRM winning most chairperson posts, independents taking a smaller share, and NUP winning a limited number.
