PLU Pushes for Nationwide Grassroots Network to Fight Corruption, Promote Unity

Nile Post reports that the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) plans to build a countrywide grassroots network aimed at mobilising citizens against corruption, encouraging patriotism and improving communication between communities and government. The announcement was made in Mbale City during the Eastern Regional Thanksgiving Ceremony for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Minister Sanjay Tanna.

According to the report, PLU Secretary General Fadil Twalla said the organisation intends to set up structures at village, parish, sub-county, district and regional levels. He presented PLU as a civic platform that would connect citizens with government and promote accountability. Twalla said corruption remains a major barrier to national development and linked stolen public funds to reduced opportunities for young people and children.

Twalla also appealed to entrepreneurs and other Ugandans to support the mobilisation effort, saying corruption harms business activity even in a relatively stable environment. He urged Tanna to provide firm leadership at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, citing the ministry’s role in Uganda’s economic transformation agenda and its importance to investors and businesses.

Nile Post adds that Twalla defended government wealth creation programmes such as the Parish Development Model, Emyooga and the Youth Livelihood Programme, encouraging citizens to use the funds productively. The report notes that PLU’s planned rollout raises questions about how its proposed structures will work alongside existing anti-corruption and accountability bodies, including the Inspectorate of Government, the Auditor General, the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and local government mechanisms.
