Wccftech reported that Rockstar Games has clarified how retail download codes for Grand Theft Auto VI will work, with a major platform difference for buyers importing copies. According to the report, physical retail versions are expected to contain download codes rather than discs, and PlayStation 5 codes will be tied to the region of the purchaser’s PlayStation Network account. Xbox Series X|S codes, by contrast, are described as usable without the same regional restriction.

Rockstar’s support guidance, as cited by Wccftech, advises customers to buy from a retailer in the same country as their platform account to reduce activation issues. The affected PlayStation code regions include North America, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, multiple Latin American markets, several Asian territories, and a broad EMEA/Asia grouping covering countries such as Australia, France, Germany, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, Turkey and Ukraine. Wccftech also noted that Japanese product codes expire 170 days after issuance, citing regional rules.

The restriction matters most for importers and players who maintain accounts outside the country where they buy boxed games. Wccftech argued that some PS5 owners may need workarounds, such as using a different-region PSN account, while also noting that this can conflict with platform account rules. More broadly, the report frames the issue as another complication of a download-code retail model, especially if console game distribution continues moving away from discs.
