What the report says

Thousands of Palestinians gathered in Gaza City on Tuesday for a mass funeral for 112 members of the Hassayna and Abu Sharia families, whose remains were recently recovered from rubble in the Sabra neighborhood. Al Jazeera reported that the bodies had been retrieved by Gaza civil defense crews after about two weeks of excavation at a destroyed residential building.

According to the report, the families were killed in an Israeli strike on Nov. 23, 2023, and their homes were flattened. Mourners carried the bodies, wrapped in Palestinian flags, through the streets before burial. The procession drew attention as one of the largest funerals in Gaza since the war began in October 2023.

Gaza civil defense said the recovery included at least 40 children among the dead. Relatives used the funeral to call for investigations into the attack and for action over the many bodies they say remain under the rubble across the territory. The remains were expected to be buried at the Baptist Cemetery in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood.

The broader context, as Al Jazeera noted, is the continuing devastation in Gaza, where many buildings have been destroyed and recovery operations remain difficult. The funeral highlighted both the scale of loss within a single family cluster and the continuing humanitarian and forensic challenges in the enclave.
