PFF Leaders Denied Access During Visit to Besigye at Mulago

Leaders of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) visited Mulago National Referral Hospital on Friday to check on the condition of their party leader, Dr. Kizza Besigye, but were not allowed to see him, according to Nile Post. Besigye is being treated in the intensive care unit after collapsing during a High Court session on Wednesday in an ongoing treason case.

The delegation said it wanted to confirm that Besigye had been admitted and to show solidarity with the veteran opposition figure. Hospital deputy executive director Dr. John Ssekabira told them Besigye was receiving care in intensive care, but declined to discuss his condition in detail, citing medical confidentiality and saying updates should come from next of kin or an authorised family representative.

PFF vice president for Western Uganda Dr. Nicholas Thadeus Kamara said the party accepted the hospital’s position but wanted assurance that its leader was being treated. He said the party had suspended activities at its headquarters until Besigye improves. Women’s League chairperson Ingrid Turinawe said female supporters were considering a peaceful vigil at the hospital if he remains in a coma.

Besigye, a longtime government critic and four-time presidential candidate, collapsed after objecting to aspects of his legal representation in court. The report says the incident has heightened concern within the PFF and kept attention on his medical condition as he remains under treatment.
