Pentagon urges faster US weapons production amid stockpile concerns

The Pentagon is pressing US defence contractors to speed up weapons production as concern grows over depleted munitions stocks after recent fighting with Iran, according to Al Jazeera. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the department is focused on increasing munitions purchases so US forces have the weapons they need at the pace the threat requires.

The push was intensified this week when Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg told industry leaders they had 21 days to submit plans for faster delivery schedules or higher output for critical capabilities. The memo, reported by The Washington Post and cited by Al Jazeera, said long development timelines are no longer acceptable and called for a rapid expansion of production capacity.

Al Jazeera reported that the concerns center on advanced missile interceptors, including Patriot and THAAD systems, which have been drawn down during the war. A Washington-based analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies said smaller inventories could force the US and its regional partners to accept greater risk in air defence. The report also noted that some lawmakers are resisting the White House’s request for a major Pentagon budget increase, while the administration says the effort is part of a broader plan to rebuild the defence industrial base.
