Patients Decry Sanitation Crisis at Bukhabusi Health Centre in Namisindwa

What the report says
A State House Health Monitoring Team visit has brought renewed attention to severe sanitation and service delivery problems at Bukhabusi Health Centre III in Namisindwa District, according to Nile Post. Patients and residents said the facility has gone for years without a functional latrine or bathing area, forcing some people to relieve themselves outdoors and making overnight stays especially difficult for mothers and other patients.
The report says the community also raised complaints about shortages of essential medicines and slow service at the health centre. Some residents alleged that patients wait for hours only to be told medicines are unavailable, while others said laboratory services can be delayed because access to stores depends on the person holding the keys. These issues were discussed during a community accountability meeting organized by the monitoring team.
District health officials responded by saying the health centre’s in-charge would be transferred immediately, and that a new latrine had been planned for the current financial year once funding is available. However, the State House team questioned why temporary fixes had not already been made using existing funds. The broader discussion also touched on wider health-system pressures in Namisindwa, including staff absenteeism and limited public facilities.
The situation matters because Bukhabusi serves a community that depends on basic public health services, and the lack of sanitation and medicines raises concerns about dignity, access and accountability in rural health care.
