Namisindwa Municipal Engineer Arrested After Fleeing Corruption Probe in Kenya

Nile Post reported that a municipal engineer attached to Lwakhakha Town Council in Namisindwa District has been arrested after allegedly crossing into Kenya while authorities were investigating suspected misuse of public road funds. The arrest was announced on Wednesday by Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara, who said the engineer was picked up through a joint security operation after government accountability inspections began in the district.

According to the report, Barugahara said the engineer is under investigation over alleged mismanagement of road funds, with inquiries still ongoing. He credited the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, Internal Security Organisation, Criminal Investigations Directorate, Uganda Police Force, Uganda People’s Defence Forces and other agencies for coordinating the operation.

The minister also said authorities are looking for three other Namisindwa officials in connection with the same investigations: the district engineer, commercial officer and district production officer. Nile Post linked the case to a wider Ministry of Local Government inspection drive targeting road works, construction projects and the use of public funds in districts and municipalities.

The outlet reported that similar operations have recently led to arrests or court appearances involving local government officials in places including Mbale and Bulambuli, with allegations ranging from negligence and abuse of office to causing financial loss and failure to account for public resources. The campaign comes amid broader government concern over delayed or costly public infrastructure projects and is being presented by authorities as an effort to improve accountability and service delivery.
