Pathirage challenges Chopra-Nadeem javelin rivalry in Commonwealth final

Al Jazeera reports that Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage enters the men’s javelin final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh as the leading contender, complicating the expected focus on the India-Pakistan duel between Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem. The final is scheduled for Friday, July 31, at Scotstoun Stadium, with throwing due to begin at 8:15pm local time.

Pathirage led Thursday’s qualifying with 82.84 metres, ahead of Grenada’s Anderson Peters at 81.29m and South Africa’s Douw Smit at 80.84m. Al Jazeera said weather affected the competition, with no athlete reaching the 84m automatic qualifying mark. Chopra qualified fifth with 79.61m, while defending Commonwealth champion Nadeem placed seventh with 78.63m. India has three finalists, including Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh.

The event is notable because five of the top seven finishers from the 2024 Paris Olympics are in the field. Nadeem is the reigning Commonwealth and Olympic champion, while Chopra is a former Olympic, world and Commonwealth champion. Al Jazeera highlighted Pathirage’s breakout season, including a 92.62m throw at the Rome Diamond League in May, a mark that would exceed Nadeem’s 2022 Commonwealth Games record of 90.18m if repeated in the final. The Sri Lankan, 23, also won in Doha and Ostrava this season, while Chopra and Nadeem have had limited competition because of injuries.
