Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the men’s javelin gold at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, giving Sri Lanka its first athletics gold at the event, according to Al Jazeera. The 23-year-old emerged on top in a field that included two of the sport’s biggest names, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem and India’s Neeraj Chopra.

Al Jazeera reported that Nadeem, the defending Commonwealth champion and reigning Olympic gold medallist, exited early after three throws on a difficult evening at Scotstoun Stadium. Pathirage’s performance was far from smooth, with only one valid throw among his first five attempts, but that effort proved enough to secure victory with a mark of 89.75 metres.

Chopra finished second with a season-best 85.83 metres, while fellow Indian thrower Yash Vir Singh took bronze with a personal best of 85.41 metres. The final also featured other major international throwers, including Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott, underscoring the strength of the field.
