What the report says

Parliament has paid tribute to veteran Ugandan playwright and actor Alexander Nsubuga Kigoonya, widely known as Alex Mukulu, after his death. During Tuesday’s plenary sitting, chaired by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, MPs observed a moment of silence in his honour. The gesture came as Uganda’s creative community continued to mourn a figure many described as central to the country’s theatre tradition.

According to the Nile Post report, Tayebwa praised Mukulu for helping shape Uganda’s creative industry and for promoting the country’s cultural identity. Mukulu was among Uganda’s best-known playwrights, with a career spanning more than four decades. He wrote and directed more than 27 plays that engaged with social, political, historical and cultural themes affecting Ugandan society. His work also reached audiences outside Uganda, giving international visibility to local stories and experiences.

The report says Mukulu founded Impact International, a theatre troupe that staged his productions locally and abroad. He also remained active later in life, returning to the stage in 2024 with Kulunkalu ne Kulumbisi: Yellow City vs. Red Ghetto at the Uganda National Cultural Centre. His death has prompted broader tributes across the arts sector.

A burial programme cited in the article says his body will be taken to the Uganda National Cultural Centre for public viewing, followed by a vigil at his home in Mengo and burial scheduled for August 20, 2026.
