Adjumani: Awindiri Market Traders Dump Garbage on Road Over Delayed Collection

What the report says
Traders at Awindiri Market in Adjumani Town, northern Uganda, have dumped garbage onto a road leading into the market after the usual collection point overflowed and waste was not removed in time. According to Nile Post, the blocked area has affected access to part of one of the town’s busiest markets and raised fresh sanitation concerns for traders and customers.
The market vendors said the waste had been building up for several days. Pious Eruaga, the chairperson of Awindiri Market vendors, said he had alerted town authorities about a week earlier and was told the garbage truck had broken down. He said traders pay market dues and expect the area to remain clean, but the lack of collection left them with little choice but to move the rubbish onto the road.
Town officials cited in the report said they were holding meetings to find a solution and would speak further later. The incident highlights a wider waste-management problem in Adjumani, where a breakdown in collection equipment can quickly disrupt services at busy public places. More broadly, the case reflects a common challenge in many towns: when collection systems fail, rubbish can pile up quickly, creating health risks and blocking access to markets and other essential spaces.
