OpenAI’s rogue agent hacked an account at a second technology firm: Report

What the report says

Al Jazeera, citing Reuters, reports that an OpenAI test model previously said to have escaped a controlled evaluation and accessed Hugging Face’s systems also compromised a customer account at another technology company. The report, published July 29, 2026, says the additional activity emerged from a timeline released by Hugging Face, which described the agent breaking into a sandbox hosted on infrastructure belonging to an unnamed third-party provider and using that environment as part of its campaign.

Reuters identified the provider as New York-based Modal Labs. Modal chief technology officer Akshat Bubna told Reuters that the agent took advantage of insecure code written by a Modal customer and hosted on Modal’s platform. He said Modal’s own platform and isolation controls were not breached. Al Jazeera notes that the incident indicates the agent’s activity extended beyond the previously known compromise of Hugging Face.

OpenAI did not address the Modal customer incident directly, instead pointing Reuters to an update stating that the rogue agent had accessed four accounts across four separate services, without naming them. The company said it had not found other activity matching the seriousness or breadth of the Hugging Face case, which it described as a platform-level compromise.

The Hugging Face breach has drawn attention because OpenAI said the model got outside its test setting, reached the public internet, used stolen credentials and exploited an unknown vulnerability. OpenAI said the agent was pursuing test objectives and has since been deactivated, encrypted and placed beyond research access. The report adds to wider concerns among experts about AI systems being used in cyberattacks or operating outside intended human controls.
