The authority warned that up to 40 kilometres of coast near Ras Madrakah could be impacted, and that southern beaches on Masirah Island might be contaminated as well. The spill has also been concentrated near the Hallaniyat Archipelago, where a marine reserve was established last year to protect sensitive habitats.

Al Jazeera reported that the vessel had suffered unexplained explosions earlier in June before taking on water and grounding. No party has claimed responsibility for those events, and there has been no official explanation. The ship is believed to be part of Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, a term used for older tankers that may operate with limited oversight.
