NUP’s Entry into IPOD Nears Approval as Admission Process Reaches Final Stage

Nile Post reports that the National Unity Platform (NUP) is close to being admitted to the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD), after completing key administrative steps in a process that has taken several months. IPOD Executive Director Dr Lawrence Sserwambala said on NBS Television on Monday that NUP’s application is now near the final approval stage, alongside that of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT).

According to Nile Post, Sserwambala rejected the view that NUP’s interest is only about access to state funding, saying the party’s recent communication points to a wider willingness to engage through the dialogue platform. He said NUP was invited to join after the 2021 general election but initially declined, before later writing to express interest. The IPOD Council of Secretary Generals reportedly sought clarification because the first letter was considered unclear.

Sserwambala said delays were also linked to the election period, when members of the IPOD Summit were occupied with campaigns and related political activity. Under IPOD procedures, applications are first considered by the Council of Secretary Generals before being forwarded to the Summit, which has the authority to approve new members.

IPOD, established in 2010, brings together political parties represented in Parliament to support dialogue and consensus-building. Current members include NRM, DP, UPC, FDC and JEEMA. The issue is politically important because amendments to the Political Parties and Organisations Act connect public funding for political parties to active IPOD participation. Nile Post reports that, if approved, NUP would become a full member and qualify for government funding available to eligible parliamentary parties.
