NRM Wins 71.7% of LC1 Chairperson Seats as LC2, Women Council Primaries Begin Friday

Nile Post reports that Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) says it won 51,093 out of 71,214 Local Council I chairperson seats in the July 28 village elections, amounting to 71.7% of the positions contested nationwide. The figures were presented as an interim assessment by NRM Electoral Commission chairperson Dr Tanga Odoi, who described the outcome as a strong showing for the party in grassroots polls run by the national Electoral Commission.

According to the party figures cited by Nile Post, independent candidates took 13,861 LC1 seats, or 19.5%, while candidates from other political parties won 3,971 seats, or 5.6%. Results from 2,289 villages, representing 3.2% of the total, had not yet been concluded. The LC1 level is Uganda’s village-level local government structure, making the results politically important because they shape party organization and representation at the most local level.

The report says the NRM is now moving into internal primaries for LC2 chairperson flag bearers and parish Women Council committees, scheduled for Friday, July 31. Participation will be limited to relevant NRM members within electoral colleges: LC1 executive committee members for LC2 chairperson primaries, and village Women Council committee members for parish Women Council committee contests. Voting is expected to be conducted by lining up behind candidates.

Nile Post also reported the next steps in the electoral timetable: villages that missed the July 28 LC1 vote are expected to vote on August 1, with NRM primaries in affected parishes on August 2. Electoral Commission nominations are set for August 3, followed by Women Council elections on August 7 and LC2 chairperson elections on August 10.
