North West Ankole Diocese Elects Second Bishop as Magezi Retires

What the report says
The Church of Uganda’s House of Bishops has elected the Rev. Canon Caleb Twinamatsiko as the second bishop of North West Ankole Diocese, according to Nile Post. The decision comes as the diocese prepares for a leadership handover following the retirement of its pioneer bishop, the Rev. Amos Magezi, who stepped down after nine years in office after reaching the church’s mandatory retirement age.
Nile Post reported that the election took place during a House of Bishops sitting at Syamalede Archdeaconry headquarters in Busia District, Bukedi Diocese. Provincial Secretary Canon William Ongeng confirmed the outcome and identified Twinamatsiko as the incoming diocesan leader.
Twinamatsiko’s consecration and enthronement are scheduled for February 7, 2027, at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Ibanda District. The article said he was born in Ibanda District, has theological training, and holds a Bachelor of Divinity from Uganda Christian University. He currently serves as rector of Christ Church Pennfield in the Diocese of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.
The transition matters because North West Ankole Diocese is moving beyond its founding leadership and into a new phase. Nile Post said Twinamatsiko is expected to oversee evangelism, pastoral work and community development while building on the institution established under Magezi.
