NBC News reported that authorities in Grenada are searching for Elizabeth “Liz” Waddell, a 44-year-old woman from Cary, North Carolina, who disappeared during a Caribbean vacation. The Royal Grenada Police Force said in a missing person alert issued Thursday that Waddell had last been seen Wednesday at Grand Anse Beach in St. George’s, a well-known tourist area on the island’s southwest coast.

Police described Waddell as medium build with short blond hair and asked fishermen, boat operators and people living along the southern shoreline to share any information. NBC reported that a State Department spokesperson said the agency was aware of reports that Waddell is missing in Grenada. Anyone with information was directed to contact the South Saint George Police Station.

According to NBC, a family spokesperson and longtime friend, Amanda Romano-Harmon, said Waddell was staying with a friend at an Airbnb near Grand Anse Bay when she left wearing a swimsuit and carrying a towel. Romano-Harmon said the friend later could not find her, and Waddell’s towel was discovered on a pier. Waddell had reportedly left her phone and identification behind. The last known sighting was said to be between noon and 1 p.m. Wednesday, including camera footage showing her on the pier and entering the water before moving out of view.

Romano-Harmon told NBC that police responded quickly and that search efforts have included the Coast Guard and divers over several days. Waddell’s husband, Cailen Waddell, appealed publicly for help, and relatives and friends have traveled to Grenada as the search continues.
