NMG resume operations

What the report says
The Independent Uganda, citing URN, reported that President Yoweri Museveni has allowed Nation Media Group to restart its operations in Uganda after restrictions lasting more than a month led the regional media company to suspend activity. The report said the development was announced on Tuesday by Tanzania-based Taifa Group, NMG’s majority shareholder through Taarifa Limited.
According to the report, Taifa Group Chairman Rostam Aziz welcomed the decision, presenting it as significant for media development, regional investment and East African integration. He also thanked Museveni and acknowledged Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for support during the engagements that preceded the decision. NMG Chairman Joe Muganda said the company’s next steps would include restoring its platforms, rebuilding local content and reconnecting with audiences across print, broadcast and digital services.
The Independent said NMG’s Ugandan outlets included Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM and Dembe FM. It reported that the operation was shut down in the early hours of June 28, 2026, after armed security forces blocked access to the company’s Namuwongo headquarters and broadcast facilities at Kampala Serena Hotels.
The article noted that the statement did not spell out the legal or administrative process behind the clearance to resume. The development matters because NMG is one of East Africa’s largest independent media groups, with operations across the region, and its return changes the immediate operating environment for prominent Ugandan news and broadcast platforms.
