Nigeria: Senate Engages Financial Sector Stakeholders On Reforms, Economic Stability

What the report says
Nigeria’s Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions held an expanded stakeholders’ engagement in Lagos over the weekend to discuss reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s financial system. According to This Day, the meeting brought together regulators and industry bodies including the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, AMCON, NAICOM and NEXIM, along with financial and economic experts.
The committee chairman, Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, was represented by Senator Osita Izunaso. He said the Senate wants closer cooperation with regulators and other stakeholders to support economic stability, financial inclusion and sustainable growth. The discussions focused on issues such as inflationary pressure, cybersecurity risks, low insurance penetration, export diversification, regulatory coordination and public confidence in financial institutions.
A key theme was the role of financial sector reforms in supporting investment, job creation and business growth. NAICOM’s commissioner, Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, said the NIIRA 2025 reform had helped stabilise the insurance sector, and he said 43 insurance companies had recapitalised. He also urged the House of Representatives to move ahead with the Insurance Regulatory Commission Bill. Other agency leaders praised the committee’s oversight and support.
The engagement is part of a wider legislative push to improve Nigeria’s financial architecture and make institutions more resilient. The article frames this as relevant to broader efforts to support macroeconomic stability and long-term economic transformation.
