Nigeria: Security Forces Arrest Enugu Kidnap Suspects, Victims Released

Security forces in Enugu State have arrested three suspects linked to the August 2, 2026 attack on St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Inoyi-Affa, Udi Local Government Area, according to a report distributed by AllAfrica from This Day. The operation involved the Department of State Services, the army, police, the Enugu State Forest Guard and other agencies. One suspect was killed in a gun battle during the joint raid, while ransom money was also recovered.

Governor Peter Mbah, speaking through the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said the remaining two victims from the attack, Seminarian Lawrence Igbo and Emmanuel Onwudi, had been freed. The report also says the victims identified the detained men as their abductors. Authorities said they tracked the group using the state’s security systems and recovered four AK-47 rifles, seven magazines and 133 rounds of ammunition from suspected hideouts.

The development highlights the scale of armed kidnapping in parts of southeastern Nigeria and the growing use of multi-agency operations to respond to it. In general, Nigerian security agencies have increasingly relied on combined raids, intelligence gathering and local security outfits to disrupt kidnapping gangs, although the effectiveness of such efforts varies by region. In this case, officials said the suspects would face prosecution and warned that anyone aiding criminal groups in the state could also be pursued.
