Police in Enugu State, southeastern Nigeria, say they have detained a 26-year-old man suspected of armed robbery and recovered a locally made pistol and a live cartridge during a citizen-assisted operation. According to a statement from police spokesman Daniel Ndukwe, the incident took place in Obollo Etiti, in Udenu Local Government Area, after officers received credible information about a man who had checked into a hotel in a suspicious manner.

The police said the suspect’s bag was searched after the tip-off, leading to the recovery of the weapon and ammunition. He was taken into custody along with the recovered items. In the account provided by the police, the suspect later admitted during preliminary questioning that he belonged to an armed robbery gang.

The police statement said the group focused on threatening and robbing POS operators of their valuables. It also said the suspect claimed his accomplices fled when he was arrested. Investigators are continuing efforts to identify and detain the other alleged gang members.

State police commissioner Mamman Giwa praised the resident who shared the information and urged the public to keep reporting suspicious activity. The case highlights the role of community tips in police operations and the continued concern over robberies targeting point-of-sale operators in Nigeria, a form of petty cash-based commerce that has become common in many cities and towns.
