A group backing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has said the 2027 Nigerian presidential race should center on competence, experience and the need to address the country’s problems, rather than personal attacks or political noise. The Atiku/Amaechi Movement, led by Umar Ibrahim Shanono, issued its response after comments from former Kano State Governor and Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso about Atiku’s candidacy. In a statement signed by the group’s media and communications director, Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal, the movement said it respected Kwankwaso’s right to speak and recognized him as a notable figure in Nigeria’s democracy.

The group argued that Atiku’s record in public service and business makes him well suited to lead, and said he has the national reach needed to help bridge regional and ethnic divisions. It also said pairing him with Amaechi would offer the kind of tested leadership the country needs.

The statement framed insecurity, poverty and national division as the main issues facing Nigerians, and urged opposition leaders and other citizens to put the country first. The broader significance is the early positioning already underway ahead of the 2027 contest, with political groups beginning to define the election around leadership credentials and governance concerns.
