Nigeria: Nigerian Troops Uncover Shallow Grave, Exhume Remains of Late Community Leader

Nigerian Army troops have uncovered and exhumed the body believed to be that of Ibe Anyadu, a community leader from Aggah in Imo State, according to a report published by Premium Times and distributed by AllAfrica. The recovery was carried out by soldiers of the 34 Artillery Brigade under Operation UDO KA and the wider Operation EASTERN SANITY II.

The army said the discovery came after intelligence-led operations that also resulted in the arrest of suspects linked to the killing of a Nigerian soldier and the recovery of stolen service weapons. During questioning, one suspect allegedly admitted involvement in Anyadu’s murder and led troops to a burial site in Umudike Forest, described as one of the gang’s known hideouts.

The remains were reportedly found in a shallow grave on 2 August and exhumed in the presence of family members, vigilante personnel, and representatives of the Aggah and Umudike communities. The family provided a coffin and ambulance so the deceased could be buried in line with local customs.

The commander of Joint Task Force South-East, Oluremi Fadairo, extended condolences and said the suspects would face prosecution. The case fits into broader military efforts in Nigeria’s South-east to dismantle armed criminal groups and gather community support for security operations.
