Nigeria: Nigerian Presidential Hopeful Peter Obi Did Not Say He Would Visit Every Secondary School If Elected

What the report says
Africa Check, republished by AllAfrica, said claims circulating on Facebook misquoted Nigerian presidential hopeful Peter Obi over comments he made at Babcock University in Ogun state on 4 August 2026. The posts suggested he promised to visit every secondary school in Nigeria if elected president in the January 2027 election.
According to the fact-check, Obi did say he had visited every secondary school in Anambra state while serving as governor from 2006 to 2014, and he discussed the importance of political leaders engaging with schools. However, review of the event video and a longer version of it found no statement in which he pledged to visit every secondary school nationwide as president. Africa Check also said Obi’s verified social media posts about the event did not contain the disputed wording.
The report said it found no credible Nigerian news coverage supporting the claim, and concluded that the circulating posts attributed to Obi a remark he did not make. The issue matters because altered or fabricated political quotes can shape public perceptions of candidates and their promises as campaigning continues ahead of the 2027 vote. In general, fact-checks of this kind are especially important during election periods, when misleading content can spread quickly online.
