What the report says

Nigeria will keep its current crude oil production approach after seven OPEC+ members agreed to raise output by a combined 188,000 barrels per day in September 2026, according to Vanguard, published by AllAfrica. The decision was taken in a virtual meeting that included Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria and Oman, all of which are part of the group’s additional voluntary supply cuts announced in 2023.

Nigeria was not included in that meeting because it is not taking part in the extra voluntary production adjustment arrangement. As reported, that means the latest increase does not change Nigeria’s own oil plan, which remains governed by its broader OPEC+ production target under the Declaration of Cooperation. The seven producers said they reviewed market conditions before deciding on the modest increase and described it as part of efforts to support stability in global oil prices.

The report said the move could give Nigeria some breathing room as it works to lift crude output through tighter pipeline security, less oil theft, more upstream investment and reactivating idle fields. More broadly, the development highlights how OPEC+ is still using gradual supply changes to manage market uncertainty, while continuing monthly reviews of conditions. A separate OPEC+ committee meeting was also cited as reaffirming concern about risks to energy infrastructure and shipping routes.
