Nigeria: Invite EU, Other Observer Missions for 2027 Polls, Groups Urge INEC

Two Nigerian civil society groups, Youths United for Good Governance and the Moses Okorie Development and Awareness Foundation, have urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to issue early invitations and accreditation to the European Union Election Observation Mission and other credible observer teams for the 2027 general elections. According to the report, the organizations praised INEC for electoral reforms, early planning and engagement with stakeholders, saying these steps could help strengthen transparency, inclusiveness and public confidence ahead of the polls. They argued that reputable international and domestic observers can support trust in the electoral process and provide independent assessments that may inform future improvements.

The groups also said observer missions can bring practical benefits during election periods, including temporary jobs and business for local service providers such as hotels, transport operators and communication firms. They pointed to the EU mission’s past participation in Nigeria’s elections as part of a longer relationship with the country’s electoral process.

The statement framed broad observer participation as compatible with Nigeria’s sovereignty and as a sign of confidence in democratic institutions. It also said that wider accreditation would help project Nigeria’s electoral progress and could reinforce the country’s reputation for peaceful and credible elections in 2027.
