Nigeria: El-Rufai Sues ICPC for Allegedly Denying His Family Access to Him

What the report says
Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has filed a new ₦10 billion fundamental rights suit against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), according to Premium Times as republished by AllAfrica. The case also names the ICPC chairman and the Attorney-General of the Federation as defendants. The filing was reportedly submitted on 13 August at the Federal High Court in Abuja and concerns El-Rufai’s claim that he was being denied access to his wife and son while in ICPC custody.
In the motion, El-Rufai is said to argue that the commission’s officers prevented his wife, Aichatou Asabe, and his son, Abba El-Rufai, from visiting him and that this violated his constitutional rights, including dignity, family life and access to counsel. He is seeking declarations that the alleged restrictions were unlawful and asks the court to order free and reasonable access to family members and lawyers during his detention.
The supporting affidavit, filed through his lawyer, reportedly says the family had previously been allowed to visit and provide food, medication and other necessities. It also refers to an earlier Federal High Court order in Kaduna directing the ICPC to allow access to counsel and personal physicians. The article says El-Rufai contends the commission’s conduct caused humiliation and emotional distress.
More broadly, the case highlights continuing legal scrutiny over detention conditions and access rights for suspects or detainees in Nigeria, especially where family contact and medical support are involved. The claims remain allegations in court filings and have not been adjudicated in the material provided.
