Top Zambian opposition figures arrested days after presidential vote

What the report says
Zambian authorities say they have arrested 11 people, including senior opposition figures, and seized weapons in Lusaka over what they describe as an alleged insurrection plot after last Thursday’s presidential election. The BBC reported that the chief civil servant, Patrick Kangwa, said those detained were linked to military planning involving foreign nationals and illegal training camps, and that they possessed military-style weapons, ammunition and other material intended for an armed uprising.
The leading opposition candidate, Brian Mundubile, was present at the scene of the raid and said the operation was an attempt on his life. He also said colleagues were shot during the incident. Officials said shots were fired at police during the raid, prompting an exchange of fire. The suspects are being held at police stations in Lusaka.
The arrests come as vote counting continues and Mundubile trails incumbent Hakainde Hichilema with results from more than half the constituencies counted. Mundubile had already claimed victory and alleged voting irregularities, which the authorities deny. Election observers have said polling was generally peaceful, while also flagging concerns about late electoral reforms, media access and freedom. The electoral commission briefly paused counting after reports of violence against poll workers and theft of ballot papers, then resumed later the same day once it said the security situation was under control. Separately, the BBC noted that some earlier allegations made by Mundubile, including claims of military involvement and foreign interference, were rejected by the relevant governments.
