Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has declared Monday, 14 September, a work-free day in honour of the late Bamanga Tukur, the former national chairman of Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party and a one-time presidential aspirant. The announcement, reported by Premium Times and distributed by AllAfrica, was issued in a Sunday statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Humwashi Wonosikou.

According to the report, the holiday is part of a three-day state mourning period set by the Adamawa government after Tukur’s death in Abuja. The state said the pause in civic and administrative activity is meant to give residents time to mourn, pay their respects, and reflect on his life and legacy. Essential service providers were asked to keep operating during the observance.

The government also ordered flags at public institutions and facilities in Adamawa to fly at half-mast throughout the mourning period. Fintiri described Tukur as an elder statesman whose work influenced the political development of Adamawa and Nigeria. The report says residents, religious leaders and community groups were urged to pray for the late politician and his family.

Premium Times noted that Tukur was buried in Yola after Islamic funeral rites. A background section in the report says he previously led the Nigerian Ports Authority, governed the former Gongola State and later served as a federal minister, placing him among the country’s notable political figures.
