Nigeria: ASUU Gives 21 Varsities 14 Days to Implement 2025 Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given 21 Nigerian universities a 14-day deadline to begin implementing the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, according to a report published by Leadership and distributed by AllAfrica. The union said the affected institutions could face industrial action if their concerns are not addressed.

ASUU said the decision was taken at its National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Abuja on 8 and 9 August 2026. The report says ASUU President Christopher Piwuna signed the statement setting out the resolutions, and that the union was especially worried about what it described as inconsistent implementation and slow action by government and university authorities.

The institutions named include several federal and state-owned universities across Nigeria, among them Nasarawa State University, Keffi; Abia State University, Uturu; Kaduna State University; Imo State University, Owerri; and Taraba State University, Jalingo. ASUU also said some branches had been allowed to begin strike procedures if the 14-day period ends without progress. The union separately restated its “No-pay-No-work” stance, objected to the National Education Repository Databank until outstanding concerns are clarified, and said it will set up a monitoring group for elections.

The development matters because it raises the prospect of renewed disruption in Nigeria’s higher-education sector, where disputes over pay, funding and agreement implementation have repeatedly affected academic calendars. The report also notes ASUU’s concern about insecurity on campuses and the deaths of some members.
