Nigeria: APC Group Questions Imo Council Poll Suspension, Warns Against Anti-Party Activities

What the report says
The APC South East Integrity Movement has asked Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma to explain the indefinite postponement of local government elections in the state, saying preparations for the vote had reportedly already been completed before the suspension. In a statement issued in Enugu on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and signed by Chijioke Afamefuna, the group said the decision raised questions because it came after arrangements had been finalized.
The movement urged the APC national leadership to look into the matter and protect the party’s interests in Imo. It also warned that the party would not accept actions by members that could weaken its chances ahead of the 2027 general elections or aid opposition parties. According to the group, party members should remain aligned with APC decisions and electoral goals.
Beyond the state poll issue, the statement linked the dispute to wider concerns about local government autonomy in Nigeria. It cited the Supreme Court’s July 2024 judgment on local government administration and called on federal institutions including the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Ministry of Finance and the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission to ensure council funds go to elected local officials rather than caretaker arrangements. The group also pointed to similar tensions in Osun State as a reminder of the broader national debate over council elections and control of local government allocations.
