What the report says

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has defended President Bola Tinubu’s campaign pledge to end estimated electricity billing, saying the promise should be judged alongside his administration’s actions in the power sector. In a statement reported by Premium Times and distributed by AllAfrica, APC spokesperson Dele Alake said criticism of the pledge had omitted Tinubu’s caveat that he would need to give Nigerians a satisfactory explanation if the commitment was not met before seeking re-election.

The statement, issued in response to public debate over the electricity issue, said the administration has taken several steps since taking office in May 2023. Among the measures cited were the Electricity Act 2023, the Presidential Metering Initiative, efforts to address debts in the sector and investment in transmission infrastructure. Alake said the government has also pursued tariff reforms aimed at improving the finances of electricity companies while trying to preserve affordability for lower-income households.

Premium Times reported that Alake highlighted state-level reforms enabled by the new law, metering gains under the federal initiative and bond financing used to settle verified liabilities owed to generation and gas companies. He also pointed to ongoing work on transmission substations, grid upgrades and rural electrification projects. The APC’s message was that the power crisis remains unresolved, but that the administration intends to present a scorecard on what has been achieved and what still needs to be done. The issue matters because electricity shortages and billing disputes remain major concerns for households and businesses in Nigeria.
