Bauchi State in northern Nigeria has declared a cholera emergency after reporting a growing outbreak that has left 16 people dead, according to a memo from the state Ministry of Health and Social Welfare cited by This Day and carried by AllAfrica. The document, dated Aug. 1, 2026, was addressed to international donor partners and said the declaration followed an increase in acute watery diarrhea cases and laboratory confirmation of cholera.

The ministry said that, as of July 31, 2026, the state had recorded 398 suspected cases across 13 local government areas. It identified Toro as the most affected area, with additional cases in Alkaleri, Kirfi, Ganjuwa, Bauchi and Tafawa Balewa. The memo also said six PCR-confirmed Vibrio cholerae O1 Ogawa cases provided evidence of active transmission and met the criteria for an official outbreak declaration under international and national health guidance.

In response, Bauchi said it had activated a multisector emergency effort covering surveillance, treatment, laboratory work, sanitation, infection prevention, logistics and risk communication. Rapid response teams were deployed and treatment centers strengthened, while the government asked partners and donor agencies to help with resources and technical support.
