What the report says

Nigeria’s federal government has approved a monthly transport allowance of N70,000 for public servants for six months, starting in November 2026, according to Leadership’s report republished by AllAfrica. The measure was agreed at a conciliation meeting in Abuja on October 27 between government representatives and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), as part of broader talks aimed at easing pressure from higher living costs and addressing worker welfare concerns.

The report says the support is temporary and separate from the national minimum wage. It is intended to run through April 2027, though the exact payment date, delivery method and full list of eligible workers were not spelled out in the memorandum cited by the publication. Leadership also noted that the allowance could total N420,000 over the six-month period for qualifying beneficiaries, if paid as scheduled.

Beyond the transport support, the agreement covered other unresolved labour issues. These included outstanding peculiar allowance arrears, with payment slated to begin in November 2026, and health workers’ arrears, which are to be cleared over three months starting in December 2026. The parties also agreed to keep discussing minimum wage implementation, possible tax relief, and hazard allowances for agricultural officers. The government and NLC are expected to meet again after one month to assess progress.
