What the report says

Former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended from tennis after an anti-doping test returned positive for cocaine, according to Al Jazeera, citing the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) and Reuters. The case stems from a sample taken at an ATP 250 event in Mallorca in June, with the positive result later confirmed by a World Anti-Doping Agency laboratory. The suspension has been in effect since August 4, and Kyrgios has not appealed it.

Kyrgios, 31, issued a public apology on Instagram, calling the result a “huge mistake” and taking responsibility. He also said the episode reflected difficult recent years marked by injuries and the strain of thinking about the later stage of his career. The Australian said he was sorry to fans, family, sponsors and younger players who may look up to him.

Under the provisional suspension, Kyrgios is barred from playing, coaching or attending events run by the ATP, WTA, the Grand Slams, World Tennis or national associations. Al Jazeera’s report notes that cocaine is banned in competition under tennis anti-doping rules and is listed as a prohibited stimulant by WADA.

The development adds another setback for a player who once reached a career-high ranking of 13 and was a Wimbledon finalist. More broadly, it underscores the sport’s anti-doping enforcement and the reputational impact of a case involving one of tennis’s most recognizable and controversial figures.
